From the very early 1800’s the family had removed from southern Virginia through the Cumberland Gap to Hardin County, Kentucky, and eventually to Rutherford County, Tennessee. There, Samuel accumulated land, some of it from John and William DONELSON of Davidson County. In September 1808 a surveyor record no. 1050 recorded Samuel Wadley possessed of 300 acres in Rutherford County on the west fork or of Stone’s River (from Tennessee's 2nd Surveyor's District – Early Survey Recording Abstracts 1808-1809.)
